There has been a lot said over the years, that your Borough Councillor should live in the ward that they are representing, there may be some Merritt to this, or there was fifty to sixty years ago.

In this modern age of communication, super fast broadband, mobile phones landlines with unlimited calls, postal service, and of course a Councillor who knows the area and is visible in the area working with the electorate, then the people are truly represented.

On Sunday 5th of December at around 18:30 a white Nissan Micra driving off road with no lights on in Village Park Stanwell, my personal thanks to the person who phoned the Police [08451252222] and reported this disgraceful act of senseless criminal damage, that also potentially put Innocent members of the public in danger.

Posted here are pictures taken the next morning of the damage caused, please contact the Police or Mick Rayner or Myself with any information that you have on this or any anti social behaviour, lets all work together to make Stanwell a place to be proud of.

Well were did all this snow come from, and to make it worse its the wrong type of snow, probably sold to use by the same person who sold use the wrong type of leaves, you know those slippery irregular shaped leaves, well know we have white slippery snow, am I the only person who listens to the weather forecast!!

I saw a gritter last night, no this is not a joke, this gritter was driving along with all its lights flashing, my god I was impressed, or I would have been if any grit was being laid?

Perhaps the figures for the total cost of gritting our roads could be made available, at the same time the figures for the total loss to businesses and lets not forget the man in the street OUR VOTING public, then we can truly make an educated assessment of the true meaning of VALUE FOR MONEY.

I did strongly suggest twelve months ago that Community payback was a resorce that we should make more use of, lets hope this is done.

When I have the time, which is rare, I read the free paper the villager. This has some very interesting letters written by educated and caring residents, for which I for one take their views very seriously. However at the other end of the scale we have people saying they are there for the residents of Stanwell North, with titles such as "NO HOLDS BARRED". Well I for one am happy for the facts to speak for themselves, without having to make fabrications, such as could be read into my unelected colleagues comments.

yes as your ward Councillor I do listen and act on your behalf, if I was to total the number of hours I spend on parking issues I think you would all be surprised.

Today there has been two vehicles parked in the Horton Road Stanwell Moor that have NOT BEEN TAXED! so who cares! well you should we all should, as for a start we are paying more to compensate for the people that don't pay, there is also a feeling that if you do not have Tax you probably do not have insurance or an MOT, does this change your perspective, or would your opinion change if your vehicle was damaged by one of the above vehicles!

Do you realise that a foreign registered car can apparently be used on our roads for 12 months with out TAX!

And any British registered vehicle will be reported to the DVLA well !!!!!!!!!!

SORRY NO TAX VEHICLE GONE!! in my view this is a straight forward easy to understand policy!!!

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the committee for all there hard work in organising this very special celebration of Stanwell Village Hall we are all now looking forward to the 100th Anniversary see you all there!

We have people in Stanwell that are fly tipping there house hold waste in litter bins recycling areas, this is not the way to go about things, if you have a problem over recycling or anything else contact me and I will help find a solution.

what I find hard to understand is that in some of the places that this is happening, it would have been complained about and reported if it had been teenagers but because its adults no one has seen or reported any thing SO WHAT DOES THAT SAY!

This is probably a nation wide problem, but as a Spelthorne Borough Councillor I have concerns over cyclists in Spelthorne and in particular our paper girls and paper boys, who come rain come shine deliver our daily paper to our doors. so I ask the Question, when did you last see a cyclist with both working lights on there bike, It is more likely that the cyclist had no lights on his or her bike and was wearing dark non reflective clothing, As the nights draw in and day light hours get shorter is it unreasonable for one to expect cyclist for there own safety to conform to the road traffic regulations I think NOT!

I would prefer that we ran a proactive safety campaign for cyclists young and old, before there has been a fatality, a set of lights for a cycle cost less than £10.00 including batteries, surely with our community police officers, police cadets, police officers, we can talk to schools and enlist the help and cooperation of head teachers, when I went to school you could not take your bike to school un till you had passed a cycling proficiency test.

Newsagents also were aware of there responsibilities, Police would check with newsagents that there paper boys/girls were permitted to work and that they had working lights on there bikes with a paper bag that had a good Quality reflective strip.

Come on lets all do our bit to keep our cyclists safe this winter.

Winter Hanging Baskets

Stanwell Moor will look a little brighter this winter due to the generosity of BAA who have as a one off chosen to give the Moor hanging baskets, these winter hanging baskets will run all the way along the Horton Road, as well as a beautiful floral display for the bus shelter. It is a shame that Surrey CC contractors who are replacing the street lighting have removed the hanging basket brackets from Hithermoor road preventing this floral display being even more spectacular.

A month ago I posted a true and very valid statement, it has know been endorsed by DC, yes we all need to work together, we can stamp our feet, shout , scream, but after we have done all of this and more the situation we are in will not have changed for the better if anything it has by know got worse!

Winston Churchill

Full name Winston Leonard Spencer Churchill. AKA 'Winnie'.

Country: Great Britain.

Cause: Defeat of European fascism in the Second World War.

Background: As Germany rises from the deprivations of the First World War and the Great Depression, the rest of the world tries to ignore the threat posed by Adolf Hitlerand his Nazi Party. But when Hitler launches his invasion of Poland on 1 September 1939 the world finally realises that the Germans will not be appeased. Two days later Britain and France declare war on Germany.

Mini biography: Born on 30 November 1874 at Blenhiem Palace in Oxfordshire, England, into an aristocratic family. His father is a Conservative politician, his mother an American heiress. Churchill receives his schooling at Harrow then is admitted to the Royal Military College at Sandhurst, where he studies to become an officer.

1895 - Churchill is commissioned as a second lieutenant in the 4th Hussar Regiment in February but soon obtains leave to cover the Cuban war for independence from Spain as a reporter for the 'London Daily Graphic'.

1896-98 - He serves as a cavalry officer and journalist on the North-West Frontier in India and on Lord Kitchener's Nile expedition. His dispatches attract wide attention, launching his literary career.

1899 - He resigns his commission and is assigned to cover the Boer War inSouth Africa for the 'London Morning Post'. He becomes a celebrity when he is captured by the Boer during a reconnaissance mission into their territory then five weeks later manages to escape from a prison in Pretoria.

1900 - Standing for the Conservative Party, he is elected to the British Parliament as the member for Oldham. During this first of his many terms in parliament he advocates a fair, negotiated peace with the Boers.

1904 - Disenchanted with a push by the Conservatives to introduce a tariff, Churchill, a committed free trader, joins the Liberals.

1906-1911 - The Liberals win the general election of 1906, with Churchill taking Manchester for the party. He now begins his ministerial career, serving as undersecretary of state for the colonies before being promoted to president of the Board of Trade (1908-1910), a position that gives him a seat in the Cabinet.

At the Board of Trade Churchill continues a program of social reform begun by his predecessor, Lloyd George, introducing an eight-hour working day for miners, setting up boards to fix minimum wages, and establishing state-run labour exchanges.

In 1908 Churchill marries Clementine Hozier.

When the House of Lords rejects the Liberal's budget of 1909 Churchill is a key figure in a successful campaign to curb their power and in February 1910 is promoted to home secretary. Here his often controversial handling of industrial disputes earns him the suspicion of the organised labour movement.

In October 1911, Churchill is appointed lord of the admiralty, where he oversees an ambitious program to prepare the fleet for a brewing war with Germany.

1914 - The countdown to the First World War begins on 28 June with the assassination of the Austro-Hungarian Archduke Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia-Herzegovina.

In its ensuing dispute with Serbia, Austria-Hungary refuses to be placated. Germany sides with Austria-Hungary when the situation deteriorates.

On 2 August Churchill orders the mobilisation of the navy. Germany declares war on France the following day. Britain joins the conflict on the side of the French and declares war on Germany on 14 August. The fighting on the Western Front soon bogs down into grim trench warfare. The First World War will last for four years.

Churchill takes a hands-on approach to the war early on, travelling to Antwerp in Belgium in October to personally organise the city's defence. Though the city soon falls, he is able to buy enough time to ensure the orderly evacuation of the forces there.

1915 - Churchill successfully pushes a plan to seize Istanbul, the capital of Germany's ally Turkey, and open a route to Russia by forcing a fleet through the Dardanelles Strait, the entry to the Sea of Marmara and a gateway to Istanbul, which lies on the sea's northeastern shore. But the naval attack fails and is quickly called off.

When the Liberals go into a coalition, Churchill's support for the Dardanelles strategy and for the failed defence of Antwerp results in his demotion to the minor office of chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster. Here he is given responsibility for the ill-fated Gallipoli campaign, an attempt to seize Turkish positions on the peninsula that forms the eastern boundary of the Dardanelles Strait.

The campaign, which includes troops from the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (the ANZACs), results in the deaths of over 200,000 men for no effective gain. It is abandoned in the autumn. Churchill is held responsible for the disaster.

He resigns from the government in November and rejoins the army, seeing active service on the Western Front in France as lieutenant-colonel of the 6th Royal Scots Fusiliers.

1916 - Churchill returns to parliament in June, sitting as an independent.

1917 - In July he is appointed minister of munitions in Lloyd George's coalition government and works to push through the development of the tank and its deployment on the Western Front.

1918 - The First World War ends on 11 November. In January 1919 Churchill is appointed state secretary of war and air. He has initial success in securing an intensification of the British action against the new Bolshevik Government in Russia but the forces are eventually withdrawn.

1921 - Churchill is made colonial secretary. While in this post he produces a white paper confirming Palestine as a Jewish national home while recognising continuing Arab rights.

He oversees reforms to the British administration of Iraq and the establishment of an indigenous monarchy both there and in Jordan. He is also involved in the negotiations that lead to the signing of the Anglo-Irish Treaty.

1922 - Churchill loses his seat in parliament at the general election and returns to writing. The following year he resigns from the Liberal Party.

1924 - In November he is reelected to parliament as an independent but is nevertheless offered the post of chancellor of the exchequer by the Conservative government. His decision to reintroduce the gold standard results in an economic disaster that will lead to the general strike of 1926, which Churchill bitterly opposes.

1929 - He loses the office of chancellor of the exchequer when the Conservatives are defeated at the election and is not reappointed when the National government is formed in 1931. While on the outer he campaigns vigorously against the granting of limited home rule to India under the Government of India Act.

His attention once again turns to writing but he is also concerned by the growing danger of Hitler's Germany. Over the next 10 years he argues in and out of parliament that the threat should be taken seriously and that appeasement of Hitler is not a long-term solution.

1935 - He is appointed to the secret Committee on Air Defence Research, from where he assists with the build-up of the Royal Air Force (RAF), a development that will be crucial to the outcome of the 'Battle of Britain' in four years time.

1938 - On 29 September Britain, France, Germany and Italy sign the 'Munich Agreement' ceding the Sudetenland, the German-speaking area in the north ofCzechoslovakia, to Germany in return for an assurance of no further territorial expansion.

1939 - German troops invade Poland on 1 September. Britain declares war on Germany on 3 September. On the same day, Churchill is appointed to his old post as lord of the admiralty.

1940 - On 10 May Churchill is appointed prime minister of a coalition war government. He also takes charge of the Ministry of Defence and the leadership of the House of Commons.

When he faces the house for the first time as prime minister on 13 May he commits himself and the nation to all out war until victory is won. "I have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears and sweat," he says.

"We have before us an ordeal of the most grievous kind. We have before us many, many long months of struggle and of suffering. You ask, what is our policy? I can say: It is to wage war by land, sea and air, with all our might and with all the strength God has given us; to wage war against a monstrous tyranny, never surpassed in the dark, and lamentable catalogue of human crime. That is our policy. You ask, what is our aim? I can answer in one word: It is victory, victory at all costs, victory in spite of all terror, victory, however long and hard the road may be; for without victory there is no survival." On 4 June, following the evacuation of 340,000 Allied troops from Dunkerque on the north coast of France, he tells the parliament, "We shall defend our island, whatever the cost may be; we shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender, and even if, which I do not for a moment believe, this island or a large part of it were subjugated and starving, then our empire beyond the seas, armed and guarded by the British fleet, would carry on the struggle, until, in God's good time, the New World, with all its power and might, steps forth to the rescue and the liberation of the Old." Beginning from 10 July, the 'Battle of Britain' rages in the skies as the RAF desperately combats wave after wave of aerial attacks and bombing raids by theLuftwaffe while launching counteroffensive bombing missions into Germany.

Though outnumbered by four to one the RAF is able to inflict enough damage to the German forces to cause Hitler to suspend 'Operation Sealion', the proposed invasion of Britain by sea. By the end of September the 'Battle of Britain' is effectively over. Germany has suffered its first major defeat of the war. About 14,000 British civilians have died in the German raids.

On 20 August Churchill tells the parliament, "The gratitude of every home in our island, in our empire, and indeed throughout the world, except in the abodes of the guilty, goes out to the British airmen who, undaunted by odds, unwearied in their constant challenge and mortal danger, are turning the tide of the World War by their prowess and by their devotion. Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few." Full copy of the speech.

Churchill is named 'Time' magazine's person of the year for 1940. "He gave his countrymen exactly what he promised them - blood, toil, tears, sweat - and one thing more: untold courage," the magazine states.

"It was the last that counted, not only in Britain but in democracies throughout the world ... On his behaviour hung the shape of the future. His civilised toughness, his balanced courage and his simple pride altered the course of history in 1940."

1941 - When Germany invades the Soviet Union on 22 June Churchill states that "the Russian danger ... is our danger" and pledges to aid the Russian people. He also begins planning a "grand alliance" between Britain, the United States and the Soviets.

On 14 August Churchill and US President Franklin Delano Roosevelt issue the'Atlantic Charter', a joint statement setting out eight "common principles ... for a better future for the world." Drawn up at sea, off the coast of Newfoundland, the charter includes commitments to national sovereignty, democratic government, free trade, improved labour, economic and social standards, freedom of movement, world peace, and the abandonment of the use of force.

After the Japanese attack the US Navy at Pearl Harbour in Hawaii on 7 December the US enters the war. Germany and Italy declare war on the US on 11 December.

Churchill travels to Washington DC to negotiate an Anglo-American accord on the conduct of the war with President Roosevelt, who also embraces Churchill's plan for a "grand alliance." The two leaders agree that their primary aim should be the defeat of Germany and that countering Japan should be a US responsibility.

1942 - In 'The Declaration of the United Nations' of 1 January the Allies agree not to make a separate peace with the enemy and pledge themselves to the formation of a peacekeeping organisation (now the United Nations - UN) on victory. An accord between the British and the Soviets is accepted in May. The "grand alliance" to fight fascism is now a reality.

The military turning point of the war in Europe comes when the German Sixth Army is defeated at Stalingrad (now Volgograd) in the winter of 1942-43. Though the German forces laying siege to the city are encircled and trapped by a Soviet counteroffensive, Hitler refuses to allow them to attempt an escape. They surrender on 2 February 1943.

By the end of 1943, the Soviets have broken through the German siege of Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg) and recaptured much of the Ukrainian Republic.

The German offensive in North Africa is stopped at the beginning of November 1942 when Allied troops led by General Bernard Law Montgomery force the German Afrika Korps led by General Erwin Rommel into a retreat. By 13 May 1943 275,000 Germans and Italians have surrendered. The war in North Africa is over, leaving the Allies free to land in Sicily and Italy.

To the west, the US and British navies gain control of the Atlantic shipping lanes, clearing the way for the 'D-Day' landings on the Normandy beaches inFrance on 6 June 1944 and the invasion of Germany six months later. Soviet troops, meanwhile, advance from the east.

In the skies over Germany the Allied air forces intensify their bombing raids. During February, March and April of 1945 two thirds of the entire bomb tonnage used during the war will be dropped on Germany. The strategy of indiscriminate carpet and fire bombing, which is endorsed by Churchill, will kill an estimated 600,000 civilians, including about 75,000 children.

Churchill describes the aerial campaign as "moral bombing", although after between 25,000 and 40,000 people are killed in a raid on Dresden on 13 February 1945 he calls for the practice to be reviewed.

"The question of bombing German cities simply for the sake of increasing the terror ... should be reviewed," Churchill writes to the chief of the air staff six weeks after Dresden, "Otherwise we shall come into control of an utterly ruined land. ... The destruction of Dresden remains a serious query against the conduct of Allied bombing. ... The foreign secretary has spoken to me on the subject, and I feel the need for more precise concentration upon military objectives ... rather than on mere acts of terror and wanton destruction, however impressive."

1943 - Churchill and Roosevelt hold the Casablanca Conference on 14 January, declaring that they will except nothing short of unconditional surrender from any of the Axis powers.

From 28 November to 1 December Churchill meets with Roosevelt and Soviet leader Joseph Stalin in Tehran, the capital of Iran. The three leaders discuss the details of their joint campaign against Hitler and reaffirm their joint policy of accepting nothing less than an unconditional surrender from Germany.

By the end of year, the Soviets have broken through the German siege of Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg) and recaptured much of the Ukrainian Republic. By the end of 1944, the front has moved into Eastern Europe.

Meanwhile, in India the independence movement gains pace after Britain unilaterally declares India's participation in the war on the side of the Allies. Churchill rejects the movement's offer of military support in return for independence and jails its leaders. Thousands of the movement's supporters are also jailed.

When a famine breaks out in Bengal in 1943 Churchill does little to provide food relief. Between one and two million Bengalis subsequently starve to death.

1945 - From February 4-11, Churchill again meets with Roosevelt and Stalin. The conference, held near Yalta in the Crimea, concludes with the issuing of the 'Yalta Declaration' committing the Allies to the destruction of German militarism and Nazism.

A conquered Germany will be divided into three zones of occupation and eastern Poland will be ceded to the Soviets. The declaration also announces that a "conference of United Nations" will be held in San Francisco in April.

By March, as the Western forces reach the Rhine River, Soviet armies have overrun most of Eastern Europe and are converging on Berlin. By April an Allied victory in Europe is certain. Berlin falls to the Soviet forces on 2 May. Germany surrenders unconditionally on 7 May.

Churchill announces the German surrender on 8 May. His Conservative Party is defeated by the Labour Party in the election held in July but he continues on in parliament as leader of the opposition and begins writing a six-volume history of the Second World War.

The Second World War officially ends on 2 September when Japan formally signs documents of unconditional surrender.

1946 - On 5 March Churchill delivers a speech at Westminster College in Fulton, Missouri, calling on the UN to stand firm against the spread of communism in Eastern Europe. The speech marks the beginning of the Cold War and provides the lexicon for future Western criticism of the Soviet Union.

"From Stettin in the Baltic to Trieste in the Adriatic, an iron curtain has descended across the continent," he says. "(Peace) can only be achieved by reaching now, in 1946, a good understanding on all points with Russia under the general authority of the United Nations Organisation and by the maintenance of that good understanding through many peaceful years, by the world instrument, supported by the whole strength of the English-speaking world and all its connections. There is the solution which I respectfully offer to you in this address to which I have given the title 'The Sinews of Peace'." Full copy of the speech.

Some of the age's great leaders called for more and more speed ahead; some tried to reverse the course. Winston Churchill had a different function: his chief contribution was to warn of rocks ahead, and to lead the rescue parties. He was not the man who designed the ship; what he did was to launch the lifeboats. That a free world survived in 1950, with a hope of more progress and less calamity, was due in large measure to his exertions."

1951 - In October Churchill leads the Conservative Party back into office and is elected prime minister for the second time.

Meanwhile in Iran, the administration of Prime Minister Mohammed Mossadeghlegislates to nationalise the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company (AIOC), which is majority-owned by the British Government.

Britain responds to the nationalisation by placing a worldwide embargo on the purchase of Iranian oil and pressuring its allies to do the same. In September Britain freezes Iran's sterling assets and bans export of goods to Iran.

1952 - With negotiations over the nationalisation of the AIOC in Iran at an impasse, Britain starts to plan a coup d'état to topple Mossadegh and urges the US to join in the operation, which is code-named 'TPAJAX', or 'Operation Ajax'. The coup plan has the full backing of Churchill, although the outgoing administration of US President Harry S. Truman is reluctant to become involved.

1953 - On 27 June Churchill suffers a stroke that causes partial paralysis but from which he quickly recovers.

Final approval for Britain's participation in the plan to oust Mossadegh is granted on 1 July. Incoming US President Dwight D. Eisenhower approves the joint British-US operation on 11 July. The plan has four elements - first a campaign to undermine Mossadegh's popularity and raise the spectre of a communist takeover of the government; second, Mossadegh's dismissal; third, street riots; and lastly the emergence of a new prime minister who has been hand-picked by Britain and the US.

The coup begins on 15 August. By 19 August Mossadegh and his government have fallen.

Under an agreement reached between the new Iranian government and a consortium of eight foreign oil companies, industry control of the oil companies is restored.

The consortium is made up of the AIOC (with a 40% holding), Royal Dutch Shell (14% holding), Standard Oil Company (New Jersey), Standard Oil of California, Socony Vacuum, the Texas Company, Gulf Oil Corporation, and the Compagnie Francaise des Petroles.

At the same time, Iran agrees to pay compensation to the AIOC of US$70 million over 10 years. The AIOC is also renamed the British Petroleum Company, better known these days as 'BP'.

Meanwhile, Churchill is knighted and wins the Nobel Prize for Literature.

1954 - He is acclaimed by Queen Elizabeth II and parliament as "the greatest living Briton."

1955 - Ill health forces him to resign as prime minister on 5 April but he remains in parliament as "father of the house" and writes another major historical work, 'A History of the English-speaking Peoples'. Before stepping down as prime minister he authorises the manufacture of a British hydrogen bomb.

1963 - On 9 April the US Congress grants him honorary American citizenship.

1964 - He formally retires from politics in July.

1965 - Churchill dies from a stroke in London on 24 January. His state funeral is held on 30 January. He is buried beside his mother at the family grave in Bladon churchyard, Oxfordshire.

Postscript

2004 - On 30 November Churchill is given a place of honour in St Paul's Cathedral in London. A specially commissioned memorial screen stretching across the mausoleum of supreme military distinction in the cathedral's crypt is dedicated to Churchill, placing him in the same rank as two other celebrated British wartime heroes - Vice Admiral Lord Horatio Nelson and Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington.

2005 - A museum dedicated to Churchill is opened in London by Queen Elizabeth II on 10 February. The museum is located in the basement of the Treasury, alongside the Cabinet War Rooms from which Churchill directed the British war effort.

Comment: We all owe 'Winnie' and the Brits in general a great debt of gratitude. When the fascist forces led by Germany's Adolf Hitler threatened to overrun all of Europe in the early days of World War Two it was Britain under Churchill's leadership that formed a last outpost. Soviet resistance in the east and Allied offensives in the west eventually defeated the fascists, but the outcome could have been horribly different if Churchill and Britain had not grasped for their "finest hour" during the closing months of 1940. We could have all ended up living in a far less tolerant and far more frightening world.

That said, we should not forget the dark side of Churchill's legacy - the regressive industrial relations policies; the opposition to Indian home rule; the carpet bombing of German cities during the Second World War that killed tens of thousands of innocents; the coup in Iran that ousted a popular leader and helped to poison future relations between the Islamic world and the West; and the contribution to the nuclear arms race.

Greatest Briton

Winston Churchill was a politician, radical, soldier, artist, and the twentieth century’s most famous and celebrated PM.

His father was Lord Randolph Churchill, a nineteenth century Tory politician. He was educated at Harrow and at Sandhurst Royal Military College, after which he saw service in India and the Sudan, and acted off-duty as a war correspondent.

Churchill left the army in 1899 to take up politics, but first travelled to South Africa as a journalist. Although taken prisoner by the Boers, he made a daring escape and returned to safety despite the price on his head. His consequent fame no doubt aided his success as the Conservative parliamentary candidate for Oldham in 1900.

Churchill was instinctively independent, willing to work with any side agreeing with his goals. His stand against protectionism led him to join the Liberals in 1904. As President of the Board of Trade in Asquith’s Liberal government he set up labour exchanges and unemployment insurance.

As Home Secretary in 1910 he improved safety in the mines and prevented the employment of child miners, though disappointed radicals by deploying troops in Wales during a miners strike.

Early failure

In 1911 he was appointed First Lord of the Admiralty, and ensured the Navy was ready for the outbreak of war in 1914. However, he was blamed for the failed Dardanelles Campaign in 1915, and was demoted in the coalition government.

In 1916 Lloyd George appointed him Minister for Munitions, where he developed the use of the tank in warfare.

He returned to the Conservative Party in the 1920s and spent five years as Stanley Baldwin’s Chancellor, but again fell out with his party. Unpopular and ostracised for a decade, his warnings from the backbenches of Fascist imperialism went unheeded. His influence, it was said, had ‘fallen to zero.’

However, Chamberlain’s policy of appeasement failed, leading to his resignation and the vindication of Churchill’s position.

George VI asked Churchill to form a government in 1940 at the age of 65. Asking the House of Commons for its confidence in his small War Cabinet, he said: “I have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears and sweat.”

His evocative and stirring rhetoric, employed in many famed speeches, is seen as representing the spirit of wartime Britain, and was essential to raising national morale.

Great leader

He was renowned as a great character and a great leader but was a paradoxical man. Possessed of astonishing vision, he also made disastrous mistakes – chiefly over the First World War battle at Gallipoli. Nevertheless, he brought Britain to victory against Germany on 8 May, 1945.

Following the Labour landslide in the post-war 1945 election, a surprised Churchill found himself leading the Conservative Opposition.

The second Churchill administration some years later did not realise his hopes of ending the Cold War. In contrast to the stark choices of the second world war, he found the problems facing post-war Britain elusive and intangible.

Frustrated and in poor health, he resigned in 1955, aged 81. After his death in 1965, Churchill’s body lay in state for three days at Westminster Hall before his state funeral, attracted millions of mourners.

Since his death, Churchill’s stature has grown. Recently he was voted ‘Greatest Ever Briton’ in a major BBC poll, beating the likes of Isambard Kingdom Brunel, Princess Diana and Charles Darwin.

There was uproar when the ‘greatcoat’ statue in Parliament Square was defaced by anti-capitalist demonstrators, although some have wondered whether the young radical in Churchill would have raised a wry smile at the mayhem.

In 2005 a dedicated Churchill Museum was opened by the Queen within the Cabinet War Rooms in London.

Wife

Clementine was tall, stately and handsome and enjoyed her social life. She was quite shy but stood out in company.

Her advice on personal matters was usually followed by Churchill and her political judgements were often wiser and steadier than her husband’s.

Their children each had a special nickname – Diana (Puppy Kitten), Randolph (Chum Bolly), Sarah (Bumble Bee) and Marigold (Duckadilly).

Churchill visits ‘Hell-Fire Corner’

On 28th August 1940 Churchill visited Dover, to see for himself the town that was under repeated air attack as well as shelling from the French coast.

It was while we were at Dover, that we saw the approaching German bombers and just a short distance away they were met by British fighters. Mr Churchill seemed mesmerized as the air battle took place almost overhead. We saw maybe two German bombers crash into the sea and some fighters with smoke trailing from them as they spiraled away from the main dogfight.
Later that afternoon, we had to drive to Ramsgate and on the way we saw a smoldering aircraft in a field, and Churchill asked the driver to pull off the road and get as close to the wreckage as he could. There was firemen, soldiers and ARP men standing around and I walked with the Prime Minister towards the aircraft. Even though I warned Mr Churchill about the dangers of being out in the open during an air raid, he said that he must have a look, and when he saw the tangled mess he said ‘Dear God, I hope it isn’t a British plane.’ He was reassured that it was not.

The Ministry of Information appear to have been quite desperate to give a positive picture of the situation in Dover. We are looking at doing work in the Horton Road And Spout lane very soon.

We have had one complaint from a resident who wanted all the trees and bushes removed from Haws Lane which at present form a very good hedge and barrier, Just so a new chain link fence could be put in.

Well what can I say, Despite the irrelevance I some times have to endure, listen and read what I have to say as sooner or later you will hear it on the news and read it in the press, I refer to the fact that I suggested in January that Community Pay Back should be used in conjunction with county and Borough services to keep Spelthorne moving forward despite the weather and as I have said it has happened written in last weeks paper Surrey seam to see the value of this resource, So regardless of who put the suggestion forward first, lets plan for what we can do if we have another winter like last year and show our residence that yes we do care!

These are early morning pictures and video of Stanwell North, a jewel in the Spelthorne crown often miss represented in the press and Quite possible taken just a little for granted by the people of Stanwell North.

I went out early to take theses pictures and video deliberately, to show how clean Stanwell North is before our litter collectors have had chance to start work for the day picking up litter which has either blown out of bins or dropped, as any were in the country some days are better than others, which can be due to many reasons, for example, has there been a local event, has it been windy.

I regularly go to Staines Ashford Sunbury, and these areas can not hold a candle to Stanwell North. I am looking for the people of Stanwell North to help me make the area even better, So if you have an hour to spare please contact me. You never know even the press may realise that Good news stories sell papers as well.

CCTV should every street have one

There are two types of CCTV, Type one is a fully remote 24hr a day recording unit which can either be a Dome or a for a better word, a camera not dissimilar to a motorway camera.

Type two follows basically the same principals as above, but with one difference it is monitored 24-7 by an operator.

CCTV costs money! were does this money come from!

Ultimately every person in the borough pays for the CCTV in the borough in which they live, and as such the responsible authorities have to for fill a criteria and demonstrate that there is a need.

Regardless of which type, there are limitations,

There are many people know who have some sort of video camera, ask any one of them have they ever missed a shot because they were not facing in the right direction, and at some point even a professional will answer yes.

So if the answer is yes does this show best value for money?

CCTV has a place but it is a tool which only has a use when integrated along with other well proven methods of operation, whether it is crime or crime prevention, So before a CCTV camera system in any area is put in place, as already said, there is a criteria to be followed, as there may other ways of addressing the given problems in that area!

I pose a Question, how many cameras could we do with out if we all worked together?

Shock and Disbelief

The people of Spelthorne are still waiting for answer and for this area to be put right after work was only partially completed under the guise, that it was to prevent the lights going out in Spelthorne despite the fact that the trees that were removed posed no significant danger to power supplies.

Work was only stopped because the ground was water logged, this was in December, How many people in Spelthorne have been watering there gardens in the last six weeks!

Ashford beauty spot destroyed by National Grid contractors

Spelthorne Council are calling on the National Grid to restore an area of Woodland in Ashford which they left in a 'poor state' after contract work.

Contractors working for the grid removed about 40 mature poplar trees from a piece of land on the A308 near Bronzefield Prison in December to make overhead power lines safe, but they have been accused of 'over-stepping their boundaries' and cutting down more trees than needed and ruining the place.

Cllr Kevin Flurry, of Stanwell North ward, has worked in the ground maintenance business for 30 years and has completed contractors similar to the one taken out along the A308.

He believes the company overstepped the boundary of their work and have cut down 20 more trees than they should have, ruined the banks of the River Ash by driving tractors through it, turned the area into a swampland, damaged trees and destroyed fences.

He said: "Me any my wife used to love walking through there, but now it is like a swampland. This was an area created for biodiversity for the people of Ashford and is or was a wildlife nesting area. I recently went to a seminar on the Amazon, and the site really reminded me of the 'get in and chop' attitude there.

"I was contacted by some bird watchers the other day who told me how devastated they were. It makes me quite angry how they could do this."

Mr Flurry first became aware of the work when residents of Woodthorpe Road said sand was being dumped nearby, which on closer inspection turned out to be wood chippings.

He said : "The contractors were clearing trees to stop them falling on power lines. I have done this type of work for nearly 30 years so when I went round I knew parts of it had been done incorrectly.

"The contractors did have permission to remove some trees, but they have overstepped their area and I believe the quality of the work is sub-standard."

A spokeswoman for Spelthorne Council said: "The contractors have not yet finished on site but it's been left in a poor state. We are working with them to ensure that when they do return the site is left in best condition possible."

The grid are currently waiting for ground conditions to be met before they can resume

Kwasi has a great maiden speech

I have posted Kwasi maiden speech as I believe it was a great speech which firmly puts Spelthorne on the map.

The people of Spelthorne have long thought they were forgotten but with Kwasi at the helm this is changing.

Kwasi Kwarteng (Spelthorne) (Con): It is a great honour to be called to deliver my maiden speech. First of all, I want to give a hearty thanks to David Wilshire who, amidst difficulties and press distortions, managed to keep up his work as a fine constituency MP. Very often, people would open the door to me and say, "Ah, so you're the new David Wilshire," and I would reply, "Well, sort of, but I want to continue his traditions of service and commitment to the constituency."

People always ask me, "Where is Spelthorne?" A friend of mine said he did not realise it was a constituency; instead he thought someone called David Spelthorne was the MP for Wilshire. It is, however, a well-known constituency, and Spelthorne is a very old name, too. It comes from an old English word of which we have a remnant in the word "spelling". It means speaking, and the "thorne" part of the word "Spelthorne'" referred to a thorn tree on Ashford common where people used to gather and speak. That is where the name comes from, and it also appears in the Domesday Book as the southern hundred of the old county of Middlesex.

Middlesex had a long and illustrious history, which my predecessor was very keen to stress-much to the annoyance of my Surrey colleagues. Middlesex did have an existence, however, and it had a reputation in this House, because in the old days it had proper elections. Charles James Fox was elected, and thousands of people were involved, whereas in nearby rotten boroughs there might be only half a dozen people. Famously, John Wilkes was elected in Middlesex, and was a distinguished Member of this House. He was described as the "ugliest man in England" but, like many politicians, he was not afraid of boasting and celebrating his own talents and he said that he had such charm that he could "talk away his face" in "half an hour". Hon. Members can imagine my surprise at the fact that we were given only seven minutes to speak in the House today.

In the limited time available to me, I wish to make some points about the subject of today's debate. Spelthorne is a seat in the south-east that relies almost exclusively on infrastructure and economic expansion, and in that context self-starting business men are very important. A gentleman from Shepperton, in my constituency, who has been in the breakage business for 30 years said to me, "Kwasi, it is very difficult. I am getting strangled by red tape and bureaucracy." A Government quango, whose name I shall not mention, had been bombarding him with forms that he had to fill in, so he had been spending all his time filling in forms and none of his time attending to the business. My thought was that it was precisely those small business people who will drive us out of recession and into recovery.

I have to say-even though this is a maiden speech, I will be controversial-that to hear Labour Members in many of these debates is to be in never-never land; they have not once accepted any blame for what happened and they seem to think that we can just sail on as before. In many of their eloquent speeches it appears that they have forgotten that wealth creation is the most important element in getting us out of this recession. I heard the right hon. Member for Oldham West and Royton (Mr Meacher), who I believe has been in the House for 40 years, say that he was going to tax those in The Sunday Times rich list. Of course, one of the results of their being rich is that they can leave the country in about half an hour, so if he were to go down that route, a lot of them would leave and he would not bring in any more money to the Exchequer.

One of the right hon. Gentleman's remarks reminded me of the story of the man who, when leaving a gentlemen's club-it might have been the Carlton Club-in 1970 gave the footman sixpence. The footman looked at him and said, "That is only sixpence", to which he replied, "Ah, it is sixpence to you, but it is a pound to me." That was because income tax was at 95 or 97%. We cannot go down the road that the right hon. Gentleman suggests, and the Conservatives have stressed again and again that the only way to get out of this difficulty is to try to let business grow.

I was surprised to hear the hon. Member for Edinburgh South (Ian Murray) refer to the Scottish enlightenment. He will recall that one of its most prominent figures was Adam Smith, rather than the previous Prime Minister, who did not take an enlightened Scottish approach. Adam Smith made it very clear in "The Wealth of Nations", a book that many hon. Members will know, how societies grow rich and how they can become very

poor. I am sorry to say that the past 13 years have been an exercise that Adam Smith and the university of Edinburgh would probably have awarded a flat D grade for performance-perhaps he would have awarded a B grade for effort, who knows?

I am pleased at this juncture to refer to the compelling speech made by the hon. Member for Newcastle upon Tyne Central (Chi Onwurah), in which she mentioned George Stephenson. There was some controversy as to whether he came from Newcastle upon Tyne Central or from Chesterfield, but I shall not comment on that as that is a matter for Labour Members. What she did say was that he made a fortune through industry, enterprise and innovation, and those are exactly the kind of things that this coalition Government will look to promote in the months and years ahead.

To sum up, I should say that the truest words said in this debate were uttered by someone making a maiden speech, my hon. Friend the Member for Loughborough (Nicky Morgan), who said that the private sector is the "backbone of our economy". In my few weeks in the House, I have not heard any truer words uttered in it. That is something that we have to be absolutely focused on, in terms of getting out of the recession. I hate to say this, but I find it staggering that Labour Members have not had the good grace to come to the House to apologise and to show some recognition of the very real problems that we face and the solutions that we need to get out of this situation. I thank the House for giving me such a good and warm reception to my maiden speech.

Know the elections are over, I can now turn my full attention back to the residence of Stanwell North.

One of the main and important task i will be taking on is knocking on every door in Stanwell North, Speaking to and listening to the residence concerns, I am also trying to put in place a survey, covering anti social behavior and how people feel about there area.

With the World Cup just days away, It is my aim that despite the dire economic position we find our self's in, that the feel good factor will prevail in Stanwell North.

He Is Back But For How Long

Victor Agarwal is reluctantly back.

Stanwell needs a dedicated, conscientious, enthusiastic, and hard-working County Councillor. To me that means a Councillor with a high attendance at County meetings, at which Victor scores very poorly. It means having a good record of attendance at outside meetings, at which Victor scores poorly. It also means attending to Stanwell's County related issues, again at which Victor scores poorly.

After Swindon gave Victor an education in honesty and visibility, I only hope that he is coming back to Stanwell with a determination to address the concerns over the roads, paths, drains, and so many more issues that Stanwell desperately need County to bring up to standard. Stanwell is not any one's poor relation. I would say to that if Victor feels unable to give Stanwell 100% then he should give the people of Stanwell a chance to chose someone who will fulfil the role as Stanwell's County Councillor.

Here's hoping that Stanwell will receive better representation at County, one way or the other!

With what has happened under the freedom of information act we are all let us say a little surprised. I have always been an open book,and although it may seem a little arrogant, but I realised when I was elected that the public perception of every person involved in politics was changing.

The main way public perception is changing is accountability, members of the voting public wanted there elected member to be assessable, Quick to act in response to there emails and finding solutions to the various issues that concern them.

I do not have the answers to all these issues, but I am willing too put in the leg work and the hours to try, your help would be appreciated, as it is us all working together that will put the Great back into Britain.

One of the areas I am at present working on is the Youngsters, we in the borough have Police panel meetings, have your say,residence meetings, but what about the youths in the area, So I am in the process of formulating a forum were the youths can talk to me openly and have there views heard and acted on, because every person counts.

A quick update on the area along the a308 and bronze field prison.

Spelthorne BC have agreed with me that this area has been decimated and work has been done out side the boundaries of the contract, I will now contact the dept of environment over the damage to the banks of the ASH, while Spelthorne BC legal dept decide on a course of action.

This area was an area created for biodiversity which was and would have been an area the people of Ashford could and should have been proud of, but not as it is now.

The banks of the Ash have been damaged trees have been removed fences damaged living trees damaged. As a Spelthorne Councillor I will continue to push untill this area has been fully restored to its former glory, It is also worth mentioning that this area is or was a wild life nesting area.

Victor is hoping to be an MP in Swindon Wiltshire, and at the same time serve out his remaining three years as Stanwells County Councillor.

The Question has to be asked were does his loyalties lie,

Victor has said that if he is elected in Swindon he will move there. so how will Victor make time to attend County Council meetings, Residence meetings Police panel meetings, and also find time to walk the streets of Stanwell North.

My car parked in an

area at UCH were two artics could park there were at least six other empty spaces, the video shows how cars parked at the junction of horton road and stanwell moor road are causing an obstruction.

The UCH lorry in the other photo is parked on the pavement opposite there yard in such a way that pedestrians and cyclist had to step into a 50mph limit road to get past, this lorry was there for at least 40minutes despite myself asking for it to be removed and reporting it to Police. Victor you are County Councillor please address this issue for the people of Stanwell North!

They are vying for the role of north Swindon MP, held for the last 12 years by Michael Wills, who will give up his seat at the next General Election, which could be only 16 weeks away.

Mr Agarwal said: “I intend to be a very hardworking MP.

“There is a lot of respect for Michael, I aim to build on that and then do things in my own style.”

The candidate was decided by an election among North Swindon members of the Labour Party.

Mr Agarwal was elected in the first round of voting, meaning he received more than 50 per cent of the vote.

He will next return to Swindon on Wednesday.

From speaking to constituents, Mr Agarwal identified the future of Dial-a-Ride, and problems with flooding as some of the key issues people were concerned about.

He also said the impact of the recession would be a key issue in the election.

“There are many hardworking families across Swindon who are having a tough time with what’s happening in the economy,” he said.

“Things are starting to improve and I don’t want a Tory MP to wreck the recovery.”

Mr Agarwal has served as first a borough councillor for Spelthorne from 1998 and then as a Surrey county councillor from 2003, leading the Labour group between 2005 and 2009.

He said North Swindon was particularly interesting to him because it has many issues similar to his own area.

Although he does not live in Swindon, Mr Agarwal said he would be visiting the town on an increasingly regular basis in the upcoming months and, if he wins the election, he says he will move to the town.

“That’s my intention, it will be easier,” he said. “As a county councillor if I’m about shopping, constituents can raise issues with me.

“I intend to provide that same service if elected by shopping in the local shops.”

He said since he had started talking to constituents in October, he said he had found Swindon very welcoming.

“Ever since I first came to Swindon that was one of the things I liked,” he said.

“I got such a warm welcome from the beginning, people recognise me already.”

The leader of the Labour group, Coun Derique Montaut, said: “I think he’s an outstanding candidate.

“He’ll build on the work that Michael’s done.

“We’re living in troubled times and there needs to be a voice for Swindon.”

As a proud Stanwell Councillor but as an Ashford resident it was up to your Stanwell councillor to find out why wood chippings of a vast Quantity were being stored in a huge mountain in Woodthorpe road car park. The answer is that Bronze field HMP are cutting and clearing trees, chipping them then storing the chippings till some point after Christmas for fuel for a power station.

Well I supose this is a different way of preventing a car park from being used for parking cars than building affordable housing on it, But this is Ashford.

FLY TIPPING IN STANWELL MOOR

These are some of the picture I have taken of the fly tipping that occurred in Stanwell Moor this week.

The people who Fly Tip and dispose of there waste in this manner cost Spelthorne Council Thousands of pounds, but what everyone needs to realise is that the residence of Spelthorne ultimately pay for the clearance and disposal of these peoples rubbish, it also should be noted that the people who dispose of there rubbish by fly tipping have charge the customer for disposing of the rubbish so they make more profit while everyone else pays for it.

If you see some one fly tipping, please report it, either to Spelthorne B.C. or to me Cllr Kevin Flurry.

I want to see Stanwell to continue to improve so please help me so I can help you, together we can make Stanwell a better place to live.

It was bought to my attention as a Spelthorne Borough Councillor that an Ashford life long resident had what could be described as a lucky escape.

A fire with out flame has ruined his home. A2D are unable to help, so your ward councillor has stepped out of Stanwell to ensure this resident has the ability to cook a hot meal, and live in a clean environment.

My special thanks go to Cllr Jaffer, who has bent over backwards to help. Harry has made sure that this gentleman has a means of cooking by supplying a cooker from REM Ashford, and arranging for it to be correctly installed.

I have been in talks with Community payback. The conclusion of these talks are that next week both they and I will be doing all that we can to ensure this property is in a liveable condition for the gentleman occupant. My thanks therefore also go to those at Community payback who have pulled out all the strings to make this happen.

As I have said previously I today, Monday 14th December, went to help community payback over in Ferry Lane, Shepperton, where we had a visit from the powers that be. The result of the day was that your Stanwell ward Councillor was there to steer the days work in the right direction. It took numerous phone calls to arrange collection of the green waste we generated. There was no shortages of non workers in support, particularly when the VIPs arrived.

Community pay back suffer a shortage of tools for the jobs that they are asked to do. This is one of the many reasons why as one of your ward Councillor I chose to aid the work that Community payback do - by physically helping them and also using my knowledge of ground maintenance to aid them in the easiest way of completing the task in the best and quickest way possible.

But rest assured before and after I drove and walked around Stanwell, as I always do, to make sure Stanwell was in good order.

COUNTY COUNCIL

As Stanwell faces another winter of rain snow and freezing temperatures, I along with the people of Stanwell nervously watch the changing conditions.

Stanwell has long suffered flooding - our roads and pavements are deteriorating before our eyes.

I have always believed that actions speak louder than words. If we accept that this is the case when will we see Stanwells County Councillor spring into action.

Please, I would not like any one to misunderstand me, Stanwells County Councillor is a pleasant locally educated guy who works locally and lives locally. This is what the people of Stanwell want. But surely along with this the People of Stanwell should expect local County issues pushed hard and in this regard I refer to the roads, pavements, culverts, and possible cuts in Stanwells bus services. This is just to name a few important County issues that are in dire need of attention.

As your ward councillor I am constantly pushing County on these and many other important issues, but progress is slow. However, at least there is progress.

I have had county officers out of their offices and down to Stanwell and Stanwell Moor to see first hand some of the county issues we have. I have e-mailed the Chief Executive of Surrey County Council to make him aware, and have asked him for his help in ensuring that Stanwells voice is HEARD in the chambers at county and that officers carry out their duties in an efficient and effective way, but as of yet that appears not to be.

The culvert under the Horton Road Stanwell Moor needs cleaning. This is a fact that people on the Moor have known for years, after the flooding last February. County have issued various dates when this work will be carried - the last of which was an assurance that this work would be carried out by the end of November. Stanwell Moor is now asking itself, you said November, but what year.

On Monday 14th December I will be working with Community Payback in a ditch in Ferry Lane Shepperton. You may ask yourself - why is our ward councillor prepared to work in a ditch in Shepperton. The answer is easy - if ditches can be cleared in Shepperton then they can in Stanwell. So by working alongside community payback on Monday, I will see the work being carried out first-hand, and will note the work done. This will prove useful, as we have Ditches in Stanwell in dire need of attention. The work in Shepperton has been pushed forward by a Spelthorne Portfolio holder. I understand that the SCC portfolio holder for community safety, Kay Hammond, will also be attending on Monday.

One of the main problems I have is the removal of green waste that Community Payback and myself are generating, in order to make Stanwell a better place to live, and one must wonder how Spelthorne Council can now manage to remove the green waste generated in Shepperton!

We have done so well with community pay back, I have as your ward councillor worked along side these guys, cutting hedge rows, reducing shrubs, litter picking once an area has been cleared.

It has to be said we have over whelmed Spelthornes collection service, who have been working very hard in all areas of the borough. so please accept my apologies for the fact that there are some areas waiting for green waste to be collected, but i have been told this will be done by the end of this week God willing.

I would like to send my thanks to the person who dumped a mattress at the top end of Long lane yesterday, Stanwell north would have liked the money spent removing this item spent on something better but hopefully feeling guilty know you will place £20.00 in a local charity pot.

Heads up I have seen the line up for the conservative MP and it is looking very good, we hope he or she will see Stanwell North for the jewel in the crown as I do, Well rest assured I will continue to push Stanwell North to its right and proper position, which should be, Stanwell North the gateway to Surrey.

There I was waiting for residence to come out on a winters evening for the last residence meeting of 2009, when Santa came along.

It took me back a couple years, and the words Santa only come to those who are good came to mind, well a smile came over my face and I thought how lucky I was that Santa had come out of his way and found me in Stanwell moor, with a shout Ha Santa he stopped and waved.

today Sunday the 29th of November we took park in the great tree race, there were many teams of all types, a well and worthy team from Stanwell and a team made up from Spelthorne Councillors among many others.

Di spite the weather the teams went into battle in water sodden ground with the wind and rain always threatening but in true Spelthorne and typical of the people of Stanwell we battled on with a smile on our faces, Stanwells team did very well, as did all the teams.

Stanwell I am sure would like to be included in my thanks too all those involved in the organisation of this event, but also to all those who took part We say thank you.

Christmas Party

Stanwell Sure Start Childrens Centre are having a Christmas party at Stanwell Moor Village Hall. I and local Stanwell Moor Businesses think this is fantastic. Some of the local companies, like Charlie Morris, Flower Vision and Passiflora have worked with me to support this venture. This is a very good start for our Village Hall and for Stanwell Moor. In time I hope that all Stanwell North businesses will come on board and support the local community in Stanwell.

My thanks to Kathy Croft Chair of the residence committee and Jim for there help in aiding me with the fight to get the ditches cleared in Stanwell Moor.

Stanwell Moor has been flooded on many occasions, we have spent the last nine months pushing for the ditches to be cleared,we are assured that the culvert will be cleaned before the end of November. I have a meeting on Monday 23November with officers of Spelthorne B.C. were i hope that an agreement will be forth coming on the continued maintenance of the said ditches.

Good news for the youths of Stanwell Moor,

Stanwell Moor now has a multi all weather pitch and an adventure play area,this has taken time to put funding in place for this to happen but as the picture show we are there.

I have optained 20 footballs, which as soon as the new area is signed off by Spelthorne B.C I will hand over the footballs to the youths so they can enjoy the new equipment.

We are well into November with our roads and pavements in a poor condition, and drains that do not work (causing localised flooding). So after many attempts to get these issues rectified I have written to the chief exec of Surrey County Council asking for these matters to be addressed. I am awaiting a response.

As many people have noticed and remarked on the fantastic work that has been done at Clare Road shops. All the shrubs have been cut back and a intensive litter pick of this area has been done.

This work was done by community payback and Cllr Kevin Flurry working hard to improve Stanwell. There is an untaxed van parked on the pavement in Elizabethan way which is now awaiting collection by Spelthorne B.C.

Pathways in Park Road have been cleared, along with the footpath running from Park Road to Town Lane Rec.

We are now awaiting delivery of the Christmas lights for both Stanwell and Stanwell Moor. We are hoping to have the trees up and decorated for the second week of December.

As residents of Stanwell Moor you will all, I am sure, remember the Reigate and Banstead initative. part of which was a promise to improve Stanwell Moor Rec for the young and teanagers. We are nearly there now with, as you can see in the photo above, the installation of a multi all weather sports pitch, an adventure play area. I have also asked for new full sized goals with nets for the football pitch, which along with the refurbishment of the young childrens play area and the youth shelter, will put the finishing touches on what is a much improved area. I believe as your local councillor that although some things have taken longer than I would have wished, we have got there in the end.

There are many other improvements coming along, one of which is that I, along with Stanwell Moor Village Hall Committee, will be starting a coffee/tea morning.

Park Road Car Park/Glenneagles

It is with much personal regret that the Council has sold this land to A2D. Stanwell Village and your ward councillors fought this sale.

But we won a small victory when this project by A2D came before planning, Key Stanwell residents stood up against this planning application. All your ward councillors stood side by side the people of Stanwell and quite rightly so.

I have invited A2D to sit down with myself and six of Stanwell Village key people to find a way forward. We await their response.

As a Stanwell North Councillor, I am determined to use all resources in order to improve the area and the quality of life for the people in Stanwell and Stanwell Moor.

I have meetings with key agencies raising problems that are of concern in our area. On Friday I had a meeting with Annette Williamson from Surrey CC on the state of the roads, paths, cycle ways and the state of the drains. I am now pushing for Stanwell North to be give priority on these issues.

Many thanks to all the people who saw Annette Williamson and me walking around Stanwell North on Friday at 07:30 in the morning, and came across and aided me putting Stanwell Norths case across to the county officer.

I am working with the probation service (community payback). We are working through Stanwell North in block fashion, opening up and clearing paths, removing suckers and low tree branches,as well as litter picking.

Community payback are at present working in Stanwell Moor. I list below the areas that either have been done or will be done within the next week.

Good news for the people of Stanwell, with the help and support of your local businesses Stanwell for the first time have a Christmas Tree with lights. The tree will be located on the memorial green in front of the church.

Father William is going to hold Christmas carols around the tree. The dates will be well published near the time, but please come and support this new event for Stanwell.

I have again chased Surrey County Council over the state of the roads and paths in Stanwell North. I am awaiting a reply!

For all of you that did attend the new style Have Your Say which had a very good turn out, I thank you.

Spelthorne Council at this meeting said that along with trying to work closely with the owners of 15 High Street, they would be sending a engineer to assess the building from a safety aspect.

Stanwell Skills Bus
This has been a great success for the youths in Stanwell. They have made from scratch three troughs of high standard - Well done to all those involved. The troughs will be raffelled at Stanwell Village Hall on Tuesday morning. The troughs come as in the photograph above - fully planted.

The compost and plants were suppied privately by my wife and me, because we were so impressed with the work the youths put in and the quality of the finished product.
We are hoping to continue with the Skills Bus and look forward to seeing what the youths will be making next.

This is a very well maintained hall which hosts many events and is a very popular venue. Be sure not to miss the Tuesday morning market.

Stanwell Village Church

I thought that I would post a view of Stanwell Church from a less traditional view. By doing this I hopefully showing how lucky we are in Stanwell to have such a lovely church in such a great setting.

This is pocket park which sits at the back of Hithermoor Stanwell Moor.

This year I am looking for Help in restoring this park to its former glory. Any help gratefully received.

Vermeulens Garden Nursery sits at the entrance to Stanwell Moor. Along with the garden centre there is a cafe offering many different products. Vermeulens offer far more than many other garden centres and is well worth a visit, which once you have done you will want to do again and again.

This is 15 high street Stanwell. It used to be the post office but as you can see it has fallen into a bad state, which was not helped by a fire. This in my view is a blot on what is a lovely village, which is little more than a stones throw from Heathrow Airport.

In the last two years as your Councillor, I would have to say that I have not done as much as I would have liked, although I have tried.

There are times, as we all know, it does not matter how hard you work you cannot win all the time.

This year, unlike the previous year, as a Councillor I had £750 to use in the community. As in previous years, I choose the project in which I would wish to donate the grant, then I would ask businesses if they would also like to provide financial help.

Last year each councillor had £1000 for use in the community. With help from Stanwell North companies I managed to turn £1000 into £2600 I will be looking to do better this year.

After a meeting I had with BA they informed me that they have four laptops ready for use in Stanwell North - two laptops will soon be placed in Viki's cafe for the use of all.

Father William has asked if we can have a Christmas tree on the green this year with the veiw of having a carol service around the tree. This to me seems a fantastic idea and so lets see if we can make this happen.

COUNTY

We have drains that do not work, pot holes and uneven pavements. Because of the sheer size of this problem I am hoping that the good people of Stanwell will aid me by e-mailing me the locations [Lighting poles have numbers] and letting me know whether it relates to a pot hole, drain, or pavement. I will then pass this information on to County for there attention.

Grass Cutting / Litter Collection

I believe that there has been a great improvement in Stanwell in these areas this year. We are very lucky that we have a very good team going around doing this work in all weather. I would personally like to single out our litter collector - he always has a smile and a cheery good morning.

Armed Forces Day

22/06/09 At 10:30 marked the first of an annual event at the council offices.

Hanging baskets in Stanwell Moor were Paid for by your local businesses.
